Running a design agency is something I don’t speak directly about often because self-promotion is not my forte. Hence why I am not doing business development.

Today, though. Today is a special day.

Inc. Magazine announced publicly today that Funsize is № 94 on the “Inc. 5000 Regional: Texas” list.

Stemming from the renowned Inc. 5000, the regional series represents and highlights the most successful privately-held companies in Texas. We landed at 94, which is beyond my own comprehension. I can’t believe it. I’m still trying to regather the fragments of my mind from being blown to bits.

For those that know us or have heard us speak, you know we say this often: when we started…

Funsize has and will always put people first, irrespective of color, gender identity, religion, or sexuality. But this isn’t about us.

This is about George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Stephon Clark, Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, Philando Castile, Sandra Bland, Laquan McDonald, Tamir Rice, and many, many others.

This is about speaking up, standing together, inciting action, and keeping that action going for as long as necessary to assist in fighting for the Black community — our friends, family, neighbors, colleagues, acquaintances — and show them that they have allies in their fight beyond the trending hashtags. …

There are things in life of which I am certain that I want — to travel and see as much of the world as I can, to be stable, to be happy and healthy, to be well fed, to be comfortable, to always be learning, to have a fulfilling career, to love and be loved. But there was always one open question that loomed over me: do I want to be a mother? Probably not. Well, maybe one day.

Come May 2019, Anthony and I will have been married for 10 years and we’ve been able to do and accomplish…

Iceland has been on our bucket list for a long time, but for some reason, it always seemed out of reach. Perhaps it was because planning that big of a trip was intimidating — we knew a trip to Iceland would be less relaxing and entail a lot of calculation.

All of that intimidation dissipated when I received an alert that round trip tickets to Reykjavik from Austin were being sold for $220 on Delta. With a baby on the way we knew it was now or never so within 5 minutes, we made the decision to book the flights.

Planning the Trip

We sat down and went through a list of the places we wanted to visit. It ranged anywhere from Iceland to Alaska. Eventually, we decided that we spend so much time traveling overseas that sometimes we forget to enjoy our own country. With that, we decided to take a 8-day road trip through New Mexico, the “Land of Enchantment”.

Rather than spend 2 days driving to and from a starting point (which was either Lubbock or El Paso, Texas), we decided to fly into El Paso and rent a car to maximize the vacation time we had.

Day One

We landed around…

I grew up my entire life with an underbite. It was just a part of who I was and I never really thought twice about it. Granted, my teeth were never perfect because my parents didn’t put dental health first, but, I don’t blame them for that because they had their hands full dealing with my heart complications when I was 9 years old. I’m sure my teeth were the last thing they were worried about.

Two years ago, I decided to get braces. I told the orthodontist at the time that I wasn’t sure about the surgery. Somewhere during…

I’m the listener. The quiet one. The benevolent one. The “Barb” from Stranger Things. The “Jane” from 27 Dresses. Let’s just go ahead throw in all supporting actresses from any romantic comedy too.

I feel more comfortable living in the background. Too comfortable, actually.

Struggling to Communicate

When I began my career as a designer, I didn’t familiarize myself with the skills needed to be a designer aside from, well, designing.

Designers need to know how to partition their mind, like one would a hard drive: one segment goes to actually designing, the other segment goes to communicating, and the last segment is…

A glimpse back to Epicurrence, surfing, and facing my biggest challenges.

I’m a scaredy cat. If I did not feel like my motor skills are analogous in sharpness, speed, and firmness to a bowl of oatmeal, I would be much more inclined to be adventurous and risk-taking.

Queue scenes from our surfing lesson. The North Shore of Oahu. Water. Surfboards. OMG.

As legendary surfer, Pancho Sullivan, pushed me into a wave, I was beyond terrified. I boosted myself up on the board, like how we practiced on shore, and somehow I landed on both feet. I heard Pancho behind me rooting me on and yelling out how good of a job…

After our trip to Finland, we hopped on planes, trains, and automobiles to explore Scandinavia.

We left Finland inspired and ready to explore. Anthony and I always wanted to visit Scandinavia because, well, we’re designers which inevitably has us appreciating the beauty of Scandinavian design.

We started in Stockholm, Sweden and traveled west to Oslo, Norway. From there, we hopped on the NSB for a 7-hour train ride further west to Bergen. The train route itself has been dubbed the best train ride in the world. From Bergen, we caught a flight to Copenhagen, Denmark.

Our first stop: Stockholm, the…

We traveled to Finland for seven days and I came back with a whole new outlook on life.

There’s nothing quite like it. Finland, that is.

When we landed at Helsinki-Vantaan Airport, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’ve heard of Finland in conversation sporadically but never did I read about their culture or search for photos of it on Google Images like I have, say, Machu Picchu.

We were going to be in Finland for a week to participate in a workshop with a prospective client in Oulu, a city that is known to be the “Air Guitar Capital…
